“It is our collective and individual responsibility to preserve and tend to the world in which we all live.” – Dalai Lama.

As part of the Pledge 1% initiative in Kochi for the month of June, we decided to promote organic farming which seemed the best way to celebrate this World Environment Day. Keeping our environment clean and safe to live is each individual’s duty and is not something we should do for a day. Only if we preserve it today will we have it for a better tomorrow. Being a part of this planet, the first and foremost step we should do is keep our surroundings clean. Everything should first start from our doorstep and literally reach places.

As part of the program, we had decided to give away 800 plants to 80 families. It gave us immense pleasure in taking such a step on this beautiful day. The giveaway was conducted in the Pallipuram Grama Panchayat office. This was made possible with the help of the Kudumbasree Unit. Kudumbashree is the poverty eradication and women empowerment programme implemented by the State Poverty Eradication Mission (SPEM) of the Government of Kerala. The name Kudumbashree in the Malayalam language means ‘prosperity of the family’. These 80 families belonged to the unit and that made it easy for us to find the families to whom we can hand it over. We gave 10 plants to each family and they were more than happy to receive it. As the news spread, the demand for plants started to increase. Finally, we had to leave the place as we ran out of saplings in no time. The basic motive was to spread organic farming around the place and the response was just awesome. It felt like the best step for a better tomorrow.

We are all aware of the pesticides and poisonous sprays being put in the vegetables and fruits we buy. The glossy look they have and the reason that it does not rot for a long period are that of these hazardous sprays being injected on to them. Just imagine how destructive it can become after it goes inside us. The impact can be much worse than we could ever imagine. Instead of buying these dangerous diseases and leading to poor health conditions, let us all open our eyes and fight against this. By planting these vegetables and fruits in your little garden or terrace space you have, you can say goodbye to an unhealthy tomorrow. Health is wealth! That is the biggest truth one will realize after going through a bad health condition. So let’s not call diseases home, instead, let’s just say goodbye to them by taking a wise step today.
