What is Internet of things (IoT)?

Increasingly, everyday objects are also using the internet to connect to the cloud, framing what has turned out to be known as the “Internet of Things” or “IoT”. The Internet of Things is a network of everyday objects or machines that can communicate with each other, gather information and transmit it by means of the web.
The Internet of Things is growing rapidly, and it has been forecasted that by 2020 it could include between 30 billion and 75 billion things ranging from smart bands, toys and photo frames to medical devices, earthquake sensors and aeroplanes.

Why is IoT been talked about a lot?

The Internet of Things is set to reform business – and specifically, the connection amongst associations and their clients. That’s because it creates a completely new channel of communication.
What’s more, similar to the internet, it will open doors for organizations prepared to boost their potential.  Networking giant Cisco predicts that the opportunity represented by the Internet of Things will be worth $14.4 trillion for companies and industries worldwide in the next decade.  More specifically, they predict the Internet of Things has the potential to make five to ten times the impact on society than the internet itself.
The biggest single change in business technology over the last five or so years has been the rise of the smartphone, unchaining internet access from the desktop. Almost 403 million units were sold in the fourth quarter of 2015, a 9.7 percent increase over the same period in 2014. This has led to the explosion in the use of the cloud and cloud applications like CRM and email which can be accessed anywhere thanks to internet-enabled mobile devices.

How does it help your business?

The IoT empowers associations to gather and break down client data progressively – without the requirement for a human intermediary to gather and enter it or the information volume constraints that it fundamentally involves. With the Internet of Things in its early stages, organizations are as yet discovering applications for enhancing frameworks and procedures.
It helps boost business in numerous ways like:

  • Enhanced profitability from the automation of procedures
  • Decrease in squander from smarter stock monitoring
  • Less time wasted through equipment breakdown
  • Cost savings and green benefits from reduced energy consumption
  • More efficient production from real-time diagnostics
  • Improved levels of customer experience and service by pre-empting issues and responding proactively
  • Improved profitability
  • More informed strategic decision-making

What is Internet of Things (IoT) Cloud?

IoT Cloud is a platform from Salesforce.com that is designed to store and process Internet of Things (IoT) data. Salesforce launched IoT Cloud in the fall of 2015, at its annual Dreamforce user conference. The IoT Cloud is powered by Thunder, which Salesforce.com describes as a “massively scalable real-time event processing engine.” The platform is built to take in the massive volumes of data generated by gadgets, sensors, websites, applications, customers and accomplices and initiated activities for real-time responses.
In another unique circumstance, IoT Cloud can furnish business clients with a considerably more far-reaching and coordinated point of view on clients, without requiring technical expertise or the services of a data analyst. The platform can take in billions of events a day and clients can build rules that indicate occasions to follow up on and the moves to make.  IoT cloud is data format- and product-agnostic; output connectors allow communication with Salesforce clouds or third-party services.
