”Hope beyond CURE”
This month as part of the Pledge 1% initiative, Bangalore Dazeworks team had visited Bangalore Hospice Trust-Karunashraya on 30th may. Karunashraya is a joint project of the Indian Cancer Society (Karnataka Chapter) and the Rotary Club of Bangalore Indiranagar, to provide free professional palliative care for advanced stage cancer patients who are beyond cure.

PALLIATIVE CARE & KARUNASHRAYA: Cancer is a leading cause of death in India with nearly three million suffering from it. In 2015, WHO predicted that 700,000 people will succumb to the disease on an annual basis. Nearly 80% of cancer patients in India access medical help when there is no hope for cure. The need for palliative care has never been more critical, especially in Bangalore. Palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and their families, facing problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.

We had gone as a team of 13 members for helping them prepare medical kits for cancer patients. The place is a five-acre haven of lush greenery, birds and felt serene. As soon as we entered, all of us felt positive vibes and the place was so peaceful.

We had an orientation for 15 minutes taken by one of the team members of Karunashraya. It was so emotional and heart touching to hear their problems and how difficult life can be  for advanced stage cancer patients. Even though it was tear-jerking, we realized how short really life is! And we all felt so blessed to help them in the best way we can.

We prepared a medical kit of cotton balls, gauze under the guidance of their staff to clean patients’ wounds. We left the place with immense positive energy and realized how important each and every day of our life is. Live life to the fullest because we only get to live it once!
