How Health and Work go Hand in Hand

- posted by Sivasree Devinarayanan

We here at Dazeworks feel that you, your body, your mind and life is as important as your work high! For this I thought of sharing a few tips and tricks to help you with your work-life balance. This is the first of a series of pointers that will be posted every Friday!

We are all mostly indulged in work so often that we forget ourselves or what our body signals us. For all high-performing individuals, once you get into your work zone, its like you are high on work and nothing matters more. The goal would be to complete the task at the earliest. Sometimes this high can last up to 12- 18 hours with a few breaks and possibly some snack time! But trust me, your body would have been crying out to you.

Few things that your body tells you that you would notice only after you have finished are neck pain, wrist pain, watering of eyes, intermediate stomach aches, head aches etc. Yes, I know you have a longer list on this. So how do we cope up with this? Here are a few pointers for this week that you can try:

Systematize your Day

We have been hearing this for long! (Yes, its tough for me to accept this too, but parents are right!) Everyday make sure you are organized, have a timetable for yourself. Utilize your calendar on phone! (Yes, we have one there too!! 🙂 ) Here is what I do – first few hours till your work begins, take the time for yourself. How can you do this? Set the daily routine that you have like say, having breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack time, travel time etc in your calendar. So now you know whats left with you and where you are free. This clarity helps you to not allocate the same slot for two things or more. Then, add your meetings to the calendar the previous day so you know what to expect for the next day.

Prioritize your Work

Having set up the calendar, its up to us to analyze what is important and what is not. The first few hours that you have to yourself, utilize this for reading something new, drinking your coffee or simply sit and concentrate on your breathing for 10 mins. When you do this, you tend to get your thoughts on important tasks. Jot them down on your mobile or laptop. First hour of office, list down the important tasks for the day and then do them one by one.

First Few Hours at Work

This hour is the most crucial! Studies says a person can be more productive only till lunch time. Try to arrive at office early, and clear your workspace. A cluttered space is a negative one. Prioritize all your important tasks till noon and focus on this (make a check list, after all we are all human and are forgetful). This includes deadlines, any solution-ing tasks, responding to clients or any important emails.

Utilize Each Second

If you are great at multitasking, this would be like having an ice-cream! You tend to spend most of your time traveling, whether to work or for any personal chores, with music and social media in and around you. But we don’t realize that we spend a lot of time on that either. You can spend this time for reading an article or two pages of a book or learning a new language or even a new technology!! This takes hardly 15-20 mins a day and without we even realizing, we are gaining personal growth.

Help your Body and Mind

With this high competition and drive to be the best along with traveling and the traffic, we are drained!! Those working from home too tend to get lesser exercise that when we travel to office. As someone working on remote and facing this challenge, I make sure we stand up or even walk during a webmeeting. We take points on the laptop or phone while we do this so that we don’t miss anything. After every two hours, or if time permits, take a walk around the office. This could help you too.

Hope this helps a few of you. Next week, I’ll be sharing some desk exercises and other points. Feel free to reach out to me with your comments, suggestions and requests!

Have a great weekend!
